When apple jumped in to this space, I recall LG being the competitor to beat. Now, if you aren’t Apple or Samsung, you’re scrambling.
In the fourth quarter of 2012, Apple overthrew Samsung and became the largest United States mobile vendor. This is the first time Apple has reached the number one spot as a mobile vendor as Samsung has been in the top spot since 2008. Apple shipped 17.7 million phones out of an estimated 52 million phones total while Samsung sold 16.8 million.
Here’s what Neil Mawston, the Strategy Analytics Executive Director, had to say:
We estimate Apple shipped 17.7 million mobile phones for a record 34 percent share of the United States market in the fourth quarter of 2012. This was up sharply from 12.8 million units shipped and 25 percent share in Q4 2011. Apple has become the number one mobile phone vendor by volume in the United States for the first time ever.
